Historic Preservation at Eureka Springs Cemetery

The Eureka Springs DAR chapter members from Abendschone Chapter, NSDAR, attended a headstone cleaning class with Eureka Springs Cemetery Superintendent Bruce Wright on Saturday, October 15. The ladies soaked, scrubbed, and cleaned 23 headstones. Some of the headstones were deceased DAR members and their families, others were stones needing attention due to their many years in the cemetery. The pictured headstone is of Joada John Cole. She was a member who died in 1996 and was an author and historian.

The Abendschone Chapter Historic Preservation Chair, Suzanne Williams, received an award for thirty plus years of volunteer work in historic preservation. She researched and published her book Nebraska and the CCC: Young Men at Their Best, preserving the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Nebraska. She interviewed over 150 men who worked in the CCC as young men. Other volunteer work in Eureka Springs is notable for her research for the cemetery, her work at the historic museum, and her research for the annual historic calendars published by a local bank.
